The label of Assanand & Sons music store in Mombasa, which started out releasing 78rpm discs back in the 1950s. The Cuban Marimba tracks date from 1960-65 and are anthologised on the CD Salam Abdallah & Cuban Marimba, Ngoma Iko Kuku, (Dizim Asili, 2000).

HL 7-51, submitted by Ray Templeton, is the only single in the discography so far that is sung in Kidigo. This is a language of the coast south of Mombasa and spreading into Tanzania.

AN 7-503 and AN 7-504 are from the 1968 Kenyan film, Mlevi, which starred Sal Davis, Mzee Pembe and Kipanga Athumani. It was one of the few commercially successful films to have been produced in Kenya.

Many of the early singles with an HL prefix share catalogue numbers with recordings on the Philips label. It seems likely that Assanand licensed recordings it made to Philips and in return was able to release Philips recordings under its own banner.

Details of the 1970s singles, with an ASM prefix, were provided by Doug Paterson and Flemming Harrev, with the latter also providing the blue and purple label scan. In March 2011, Frank Schneider very kindly sent in details of HL 7-27, the earliest single on the label so far.

In September 2011, a further 15 singles from the ASM series and three singles from the HL series were added. All were located in the University of Mainz’s African Music Archive. Its catalogue doesn’t make clear whether ASM 023 and ASM 024 are by Villa Negro with Chevros and Abdalah the songwriters or whether they are the featured singers, so my label interpretation may be incorrect.

The Mainz catalogue also suggests that the B-side of HL 7-61 may have been overstamped with another song, Tanzania Ni Yetu, replacing the original credit listed here.
