The record label was a division of Philips, the Dutch-based electronics giant , and was originally set up in 1950. Twelve years later, in 1962, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon, owners of the Polydor label, set up a joint venture, Phonogram. Both Philips and Polydor issued records in Africa during the 1960s, then in 1972 Phonogram merged with Polydor to form a new company, Polygram. At this point, the Philips label all but disappeared in East Africa, leading me to believe that the Black Blood releases from the mid 1970s may have been imports.

The majority of the releases are Tanzanian bands singing in Kiswahili, though the label also licensed tracks from elsewhere in Africa. HL 7-79, for example, is by a band who feature on the Dakar Sound Vol 2 compilation CD, of Senegalese music, though the titles appear to suggest the band was in fact from Anglophone West Africa.

Two other notable exceptions to the predominantly Swahili flavour of Philips releases are HL 7-52 and HL 7-90, which are in Giriyama and Kikamba respectively, although the label credits says they were produced by Assanands of Mombasa, who produced their own records of Tanzanian bands in the 1960s on the Mzuri label, which also carried an HL prefix.

That the Jamhuri Jazz Band is so well represented here is because the information has come from the Wanyika Groups discography compiled by John Beadle with Doug Paterson and Peter Toll for Toshiya Endo’s website, which you can find here

How PK 7-006 fits in with the 9000 series is hard to tell. Intriguingly, the writing credit is for I.S. Juma, who may well be Issy Juma of Les Wanyika fame.
